Be honest about what you use MS Project for
Two very different users share the same licence. The first genuinely needs critical-path analysis, resource levelling and constraint-heavy schedules — construction, engineering, large infrastructure. For them MS Project remains the right tool and no lightweight alternative is a real substitute.
The second maintains a Gantt chart because a template demanded one, then does the real work in email, spreadsheets and slides. That user is paying for a scheduling engine to get a picture, and paying for the reporting twice.
What changes when reporting is native
- The plan feeds the report. Milestone movement and variance appear in the narrative automatically.
- Registers live with the plan. Risks and changes sit alongside the schedule instead of in a parallel workbook.

What you give up
